Sprout it out
Updated: May 1
The month of May is here and opens an opportunity to grow healthy food for yourself, family & friends.
Let's take a quick look at super-nutrients you can grow right on your countertop.
The Superfood on Your Counter: Broccoli Sprouts
Broccoli sprouts are nutritional powerhouses, packed with up to 100 times more sulforaphane, a powerful antioxidant and cancer-fighter, than the fully grown broccoli. A superfood for your brain and heart, they're also the easiest and fastest-growing plant you can put in your kitchen with nothing more than a mason jar, a little water, and a little time. Since they don't need soil or sunshine to sprout, you'll be ready to eat a crisp, tangy batch of sprouts in just five days, a great “entry-level” plant to grow for anyone with an interest in healthy gardening.

Beyond their great health benefits, these tangy sprouts are super useful as far as cooking goes. Their light, peppery snap is great on avocado toast, a secret healthy boost in your fruit smoothie, or a fresh topping on any salad or wrap. Growing them yourself gives you the final word on the good stuff, ensuring your family gets the most organic, freshest produce in town without paying a fortune at the grocery store. Broccoli sprouts are a great way to kick off your garden and bring “farm-to-valley” nutrition straight to your kitchen counter.
Quick "How-To" Garden the Sprouts:
Step 1: Soak 2 tablespoons of sprouting seeds in a jar overnight.
Step 2: Drain the water and rinse the seeds 2–3 times a day.
Step 3: Keep the jar upside down at an angle to let excess water drain away.
Step 4: Harvest in 4–6 days and enjoy in salads, sandwiches, or smoothies
